Few things are as simply beautiful as unfinished pine or oak furniture. But wood without stain is like a photo without flash: it's fine, but dull. Wood stain is simple and fun to apply, and your reward is furniture that's richer and more impressive.
What does stain do?
Wood is very porous, but not evenly so. The grain pattern you see is alternating layers of hard and soft wood. Wood stain absorbs much deeper into the porous parts, exaggerating the grain as you wipe. You'll see the results instantly. Stain also helps seal the wood, so it doesn't absorb spills later.
Gear up Get rubber gloves. Most stain is natural and safe, but just like wood, your porous hands soak it up. Stain is permanent. That's why you always see gloves for sale right next to the stains. You don't need an expensive brush for this job. Many craftsmen use a clean cotton rag to rub it on. If you want to spend money, invest in a good drop-cloth. Remember: it's a dye, and drips don't just wipe up. Stain adds drama to wood by soaking in. Varnish seals wood by not soaking in. Avoid all-in-one stain/finish products, which don't do either job very well. Wipe on, wipe off After you've sanded your unfinished furniture glassy smooth and wiped it clean of dust, start staining. Follow product instructions. Don't forget to stir it, because pigments settle to the bottom. Apply stain generously, then wipe off the excess after it has had a chance to soak in but before it starts to dry. | ![]() |
Using a clean cotton rag, wipe off the excess, working against the grain. This helps push stain into the soft spots, and rub it off the hard spots, creating a dramatic texture. Simply beautiful!
Give the stain plenty of time to dry, about a day. One coat is probably enough, but it doesn't hurt to add another, even of a different color, if you're not happy with the look.
Staining is always optional, but a sealing coat is not. Varnish, lacquer and penetrating oils protect the porous wood of your unfinished furniture from dirt and spills, so it looks great for ages. If you're not sure which to use, chat with the smart clerk at the hardware store.
Now stand back, put your hands on your hips and say, "Wow! I did that!"
